You have the opportunity to redefine your meaning and purpose in your later years. Call it “post-25-year-old cell milestone.” Call it your “Second Half.” Call it a Bridge Career or Encore Career. Call it Retirement. Call it Rehirement. Call it Living a Significant Life. These things can occur whenever you want them to. They don’t just magically happen for everyone at a set age or life season. Don’t wait until retirement. Rick Warren, author of Purpose Driven Life says it rather bluntly: “You know you’re going to die, so whatever you’re going to do with your life, you’d better get on with it.” Warren challenges people to ask three questions:
- Who am I?
- Do I matter?
- What’s my purpose in life?
Will we choose to live with a self-absorbed temporal focus or with a generational mindset?
We neither have the time nor make the time to reflect on life’s purpose. We spend so much time on meaningless things when we could be squeezing out every minute possible with our spouse and kids. We must rediscover the essentials and put our time and energies there. You might need to shove away some things and let God in. We must be strong enough to say no to the mindless cultural magnets that draw us from what is important. We need people in our lives to poke and prod us to focus on the correct priorities. I might be that finger jabbing you in the side right now.
