Retirement is not an endless vacation. Talk to anyone who has recently retired, and they will tell you that approach becomes a recipe for boredom and a feeling of uselessness after a number of months. It is never too early, and never too late to have some fruitful thought and dialogue with your spouse about what to expect and what to plan for.
