In a recent “State of the Church Series,” George Barna explored some patterns in American religious behaviors over the last twenty years.
- Forty percent of adults read their Bible weekly outside of church (down from 45 percent).
- Nineteen percent of adults donate some of their time weekly in serving at a church (down from 27 percent).
- Fifteen percent of adults can be expected to show up in a Sunday school class (down from 23 percent).
- Forty percent of adults can be expected to attend church (down from 49 percent).
- Thirty-seven percent of adults are “unchurched in the last six months” (up from 24 percent).
The good news is that 40 percent of adults classify themselves as “born again,” up from 35 percent. These adults believe that they will experience eternal salvation based only on their commitment to Jesus Christ, personal confession of their sins, and acceptance of Christ as their Savior.
The Billy Graham Association conducted a survey about those who professed to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
